My Device is My Vice
A poem on how our devices distract, distorts, and disorders our lives as humans
My device is my source of dopamine
I now can’t seem to live without it
Incessantly it drips into my bloodstream
Addicting my body, soul, and spirit
My device is my source of distraction
It distorts, disorders, and deviates
It has an indescribable attraction
My pain it temporarily alleviates
My device promises me so much
Ding! It notifies me about this
Dong! It reminds me I need that
It pulls me from what I shouldn't miss
Mesmerized there I sat
My device puts a glow upon my eyes
As I mindlessly watch others live their lives
Like it, my outside veneer is shiny
While it stifles the glow I once had inside
My screen time continuously grows
As my embodied time gradually shrinks
Time slows down as I scroll through vids
Time speeds up as I ignore my kids
My device is the trojan horse I've invited in
I foolishly welcomed it into my soul
Once an appendage now it's firmly rooted within
Deep inside I realize I've lost control
My device possesses me, not the other way around
Its software and algorithm nudges me on what to do
My individual thoughts and feelings no longer abound
Now my device tells me what's supposedly true
My device has become my vice
It’s very efficient at de-humanizing me
Instead of it becoming more human
I’m becoming more machine
Digital makes everything looks so good
The real world is dull
but AR/VR will fix that
But there's still a problem
Im still in the real world
But they've got a solution
thats already in motion
Soon I’m going to get my personal update
My device will be happy then
It’s been waiting patiently for my software update
